How To Have a Hyggeligt Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day is here, and the pressure is on. Don’t get me wrong. I'm all for people showing love. But if, like me, you find the labyrinth of deals, dining options and peer pressure off putting, might I suggest a fantastic alternative? *Adopts voice of an English butler* A night in with your favourite person, a candle, a few glasses of vino, a comfortable couch and a throw might just be the trendiest and most romantic way to celebrate Valentine’s Day this year!
Hygge, the Danish concept of making yourself and your home as cosy as possible, is all the rage and with good reason. After all, it doesn't cost a thing. Now pessimists may ask, what’s special about that? Plenty actually, if lifestyle guru, Anne Chertoff is to be believed. She says, “…The mindset is changing about what ‘I love you’ means. It doesn’t correlate to how much you spend anymore, but how much effort and time you’ve put into your time together.”
So if you haven’t decided on what to do yet, take a look at these easy ideas and my picks to have a Hyggeligt night.
How To Have a Hyggeligt Valentine’s Day
Invest in a Good Couch: Dillydallying over buying a good couch? Well, this might be the best time to stop procrastinating. From settees and love seats, to traditional sofas and sofa beds, a good couch is a must when you are trying to relax with your loved ones. My favourite - the Kowloon set. It’s got room for some blankets too, so you don’t have to get up once you’re all snuggly and cosy.
Prep Your Couch: Once the couch has been taken care of, get down to prepping it. A few fluffy cushions, and a good throw or a shawl will do the trick. #Protip: Stay away from synthetic materials, and opt for cotton, linen or wool.
Invest in Candles: This one’s a no-brainer. Candles with soft, floral scents are a great way to set the mood. Of course, making sure the sparks are flying between you and your special someone is entirely up to you.
Set the Table: Instead of spending money dining out, how about setting up your very own table for two? A good runner, some elegant (or fun) crockery, a vase with a few fresh flowers, a votive and voila! You’re all set. Featured in the image below is the Amer runner by Urban Ladder.
Create an Ambience with Mood Lighting: While I write it last, this is the most important. Because without a good lamp, there is no hygge. To perfect your hyggeligt mood, choose a lamp that fills your room with a soft, warm glow. By all means, avoid a single source of light. Multiple low-intensity lights are much better at adding depth (and romance) to your room.
A few little things can go a long way in making sure you have the Valentine’s Day of your dreams. Although low-effort, they’re high-impact. So this year, skip all the over-hyped venues and stay in. Hope you have a great Valentine’s Day!
